On October 9th, 2011, PACI held its 4th Annual Cancer Awareness Seminar at the Skirball Cultural Center . The seminar was mainly aimed at the Persian American community. Leading physicians, each in their own field of expertise, presented the most enlightening, informative, and practical advice on thyroid cancer (Dr. Armando Guiliano), breast cancer (Dr. Homayoon Sanati) and hematology (Dr. Sepehr Rokhsar). The importance of proper nutrition in prevention of cancer was highly emphasized by Professor Parviz Ghadirian. Nowadays, prevention, early detection, treatment, and healthy nutrition increase cancer survivor rates.

The event was an absolute success with a full house. The audience was particularly touched when Mrs. Sadler, the PACI chair founder and a cancer survivor herself, asked all the fellow cancer survivors to the stage. They all received a standing ovation; and the audience was moved by so many radiantly beautiful and gracious survivors.

Mr. John Paley, General Manager of 670AM KIRN Radio Iran, a cancer survivor himself, presented a $12,000 check on behalf of PACI to Be The Match, the National Marrow Donor Program. The funds donated were raised through the generous contribution of the general public, which pay for the marrow test kits, in registering possible donors who help save lives.  The audience had an amazing afternoon filled with education and entertainment. The latter of which was by an outstanding live performance by the talented Arash Avin.

The Persian American Cancer Institute (PACI) would like to thank you for participating at this year's cancer awareness seminar. Without the hard work and dedication of our wonderful PACI volunteers from California State University of Northridge's Iranian Student Association, and UCLA's Society of Persian Sisterhood (Sigma Pi Sigma), PACI would be unable to host such a successful seminar.

A big, "Thank you" goes out to our volunteers who helped out with the bone marrow drive at CSUN. We raised awareness, and added more possible donors to the registry. Thank you for your incredible effort.

Salute to Life Recap

On November 7, 2010, PACI held its Second Annual Salute to Life luncheon at the prestigious Riviera Country Club, in Pacific Palisades. This event is intended to honor cancer survivors and recognize the struggle of those currently undergoing treatment, as well as reminding those around them of the importance of love and support during this critical time.

At this year's luncheon, PACI honored Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Professor Samuel Rahbar for their contribution to the fight against cancer and their efforts toward bettering the lives of those affected by this disease. Guests included some of the prominent individuals of our community, including the Honorable Mayor Jimmy Delshad, Ms. Barbara Lazaroff, Ms. Jacqueline Bell, Mrs. Homa Sarshar, Mr. Pouria Abbassi, CEO of Los Angeles Convention Center, and Mr. John Paley, General Manager of 670AM KIRN Radio Iran, to mention a few. The guests were surprised by the unexpected appearance of the award winning Hollywood actress, Ms. Rene Russo.

The room was filled with over 250 guests; all attending cancer survivors received a complimentary invitation. The luncheon was hosted by the beautiful and talented anchorwoman Shally Zomorodi, along with the talented comedian Max Amini who also conducted the live auction. The day concluded with a live performance by Arash Avin, accompanied by Hovik on the piano, followed by a solo performance by Raana; Arash Avin and Raana perform as part of a band, called ROUGE.

In continuance with its relentless effort to expand the Iranian-American bone marrow registry database, PACI presented Be The Match Foundation with a $12,000 check to help sponsor the registration cost future online registries, as well as live bone marrow registry drives.

This encouraging event and everybody's participation continue to give us motivation and strength to stay true to our mission to increase cancer awareness within the Persian-American community to cement the foundation for a better healthier world.

Mahmood Sabzi

Mahmood Sabzi has been a genrous, and kind-hearted soul, by making a 100% donation to PACI's "Salute to Life" event. Mr. Sabzi is a wonderfully talented artist, and everyone here at PACI is honored that he would make such a selfless gesture. The auction at our event would not have been as successful without his gracious gift.
